Texture- the basics
As you have seen in the video 4 main types of texture exist
Music which is Monophonic
Music which is Homophonic
Music which is Polyphonic
Music which is Heterophonic
Phony- from the Greek phōnē meaning sound or voice.
We often describe texture as being "thick", "thin", "busy" or "sparse", but the terms above help us be more specific about is happening in the music. Texture refers to the amount and type of layers, not necessarily instruments. For example a piece for 50 singers all singing the same part or melody would still be a "thin" texture despite the large numbers singing together. Therefore, it is necessary to think about what each line or part is actually doing.
Each page above contains a basic explanation of the type of texture followed by a simple example, to access more detailed definitions needed for GCSE and AP Music Theory and more comprehensive links of examples click the relevant link.
